Jack Wilshere: Wenger stopped me from ruining my World Cup dream

Thursday, May 29, 2014 by Dailystar.co.uk

JACK WILSHERE has revealed how Arsene Wenger stopped him wrecking his own World Cup dream.

FINDING HIS FITNESS: Wilshere getting back to his best ahead of the World Cup

The Arsenal star admits he was panicking about missing out on Brazil after suffering a broken foot playing for England in the friendly with Denmark on March 5.

But despite the Gunners having a fight on their hands to qualify for the Champions League and an FA Cup Final to contest, Wenger refused to rush back his star midfielder.

He waited until the final league game of the season at Norwich to give Wilshere a 27-minute run out, then brought him on for extra-time in the 3-2 FA Cup Final win over Hull at Wembley.

Now the 22-year-old has declared himself in perfect shape for the World Cup challenge, which begins with a farewell friendly against Peru at the national stadium tomorrow.

"I did speak to him because I came back into training and I was panicking a bit about the (England) squad," Wilshere said.

"I wanted to be in it. I went to him and said, 'I think I am ready'.

"He said, 'No you are not, you need to train if you are to have a good World Cup. You need a good fitness base to make sure you are right in every aspect'.

"And that is what I am now and I'm here and I'm happy for that."

Wilshere has had his fair share of injuries in his short career, but insists it won't stop him going in where it might hurt for England in Brazil.

"Unfortunately, I've been in that position a lot, wondering how long it takes to come back and get back to the same level," he added.

"My problems have never been from playing or muscle injuries, it has always been an impact injury.

"I can't say I am not going to go near any player now! Anything can happen in that respect.

"But I am fully fit, my muscles are good and hopefully it will be all right."
