Chile v Australia Match
Chile and Australia will face off in the second Group B match on June 13th 2014 at 23:00 GMT in Cuiaba, Brazil, broadcast live on ITV.
As you probably could have guessed, this particular match will not attract nearly the amount of attention as the other Group B match on the 13th, Holland vs Spain, but will be just as important in deciding the outcome of the group. The Australians are not really being given a chance in this, or any other match, but they will be heading to Brazil hoping to prove a host of critics wrong. Chile will be on home soil in South America, but will still be up against it as they are without a doubt one of the weaker sides from the CONMEBOL region.
CHILE TEAM PREVIEW
Chile defied the critics in CONMEBOL qualifying by finishing third and advancing to the World Cup with relative ease. With that said, Chile conceded nearly as many goals as they scored in qualifying and their defense was regularly called into question. While the Chilean defense will more than likely be safe when up against a woeful Australian attack, the same cannot be said in their matches against Spain and Holland.
While there is no doubt that players like Alexis Sanchez and Arturo Vidal will find the back of the net with relative regularity, the real test will be whether their defense can perform competently. The one thing that the Chilean defense does have is experience, and that experience will either make or break them in their three guaranteed Group B matches. As it stands, Chile are given a top price of even money (2.0) from to advance out of World Cup Group B, and if their defense performs with credit is more than likely that those odds will shorten.
AUSTRALIA TEAM PREVIEW
After coasting through the third round of AFC qualifying, the Australians were really put to the test in the fourth and final round. Placed into a group alongside Japan, Jordan, Oman, and Iraq, Australia recorded 13 points from 8 matches en route to finishing in the second guaranteed qualifying spot for the 2014 World Cup. Despite the Australians putting on a solid display throughout Asian qualifying, they are undoubtedly going to be up against it in a group as strong as Group B.
The Aussie's impressed many people during their time in South Africa in 2010, but the general consensus is that the 2014 competition will bring about different results entirely. The biggest problem facing Australia is the fact that many of their key players are on the wrong side of 30 and well past their prime. Players like Tim Cahill (34), Mark Schwarzer (41), and Mark Bresciano (34) are the team's leaders, the players with the most Caps, and also the oldest players in the squad. There is no denying that with age comes experience, but in Group B teams are going to need more than experience to survive and advance.
