Luis Suarez returns from injury to score against England
Friday, June 20, 2014 by YAHOO SportLuis Suarez sat out Uruguay's shock loss to Costa Rica to start their World Cup as he recovers from knee surgery mere weeks earlier, but to England's dismay, he returned to start against the country he lit up with goals all season at Liverpool and he picked up right where he left off.
The first 38 minutes of the Group D match between two sides desperate for a win was frenetic and included a few near misses — two from England's Wayne Rooney, who is still searching for his first World Cup goal. But it was Suarez who came through with the match's first goal from his first shot on target — heading a lovely cross from Edinson Cavani over the outstretched Joe Hart to put Uruguay ahead 1-0 going into halftime.
This was Suarez's 40th goal for Uruguay and it was made even more memorable since he scored against a team that includes several of his Liverpool teammates — including captain Steven Gerrard, who told the press he wouldn't speak to Suarez in the build up to the match. If this goal helps send England home early, it probably won't improve Suarez's villainous image in the Premier League.
