Had they defeated the much-fancied Dutch they would have faced Lionel Messi's Argentina for a spot in Sunday's final.

"We did not lose in the World Cup and we go back to Costa Rica with our heads up."

Manager Jorge Luis Pinto said: "During this World Cup we have done very beautiful things that many people didn't believe we could achieve - wonderful things.

"We played against great powerhouses of football. We leave the tournament unbeaten. It's incredible.
