Klinsmann praises Mexico, but has no fear of Tuesday's opponent
Monday, March 25, 2013 by YAHOO SportJurgen Klinsmann’s United States squad is confident of victory in the Estadio Azteca against Mexico on Tuesday, but respects El Tri’s quality.
“We have a lot of respect for Mexico, but we do not have any fear,” Klinsmann told ESPN. “El Tri knows it has to get the three points from this game, the same as us.”
The United States squad landed in Mexico City Sunday afternoon ahead of Tuesday’s important qualification match against Mexico in the Estadio Azteca and headed to Cruz Azul’s training ground for a light workout.
The pressure may be intense come game time, but the US coach needed no reminding that last time the teams met in the Estadio Azteca, it was the northern side that took the honors in a 1-0 victory.
“I’ve never had such a big response like that win in Mexico City, it meant so much to so many people,” said Klinsmann. “It’s a great rivalry and it’s getting bigger every day.”
The Mexico camp has so far been quiet ahead of Tuesday’s showdown, with none of the players allowed to speak to the press after Friday’s 2-2 draw in Honduras.
That should change Monday, when Mexico is scheduled to hold a press conference in the afternoon and players will be made available for the media.
