Messi: "Meeting the Pope was unforgettable"

Wednesday, August 14, 2013 by Marca.com

Messi spoke of his pride at travelling to the Vatican to be received by Pope Francis, before the friendly between Italy and Argentina.

"I'm proud to have met the Pope here and also because he is Argentinian. Football has taken me all over the world, to the most incredible places, but what happened today is truly unforgettable", he said.

The Pope referred to the game of football as an opportunity to provide a good example to millions of people. "The best way to reply is to put on a clean spectacle on the playing field and in the stands. This is how we should continue", Messi added.

"We footballers always have to set a good example on the pitch. Only by respecting our opponent can we become men and better players", he mused.
