Michu earns a call-up to the Spanish squad for the first time after injury to Villa

Monday, October 07, 2013 by Dailymail

Swansea forward Michu received his first call-up to the Spain squad on Sunday following David Villa's withdrawal.

Villa sustained an ankle injury in Atletico Madrid's win over Celta Vigo and was forced to pull out of the party to face Belarus and Georgia in a World Cup qualifying double-header.

His misfortune gives Michu the chance to represent his country for the first time at any level.

Call up: Swansea striker Michu has been called into the Spanish squad for the first time as a replacement for David Villa

Selection: Vicente del Bosque picked the 27-year-old ahead of more experienced international players such as Fernando Llorente and Roberto Soldado

The 27-year-old has been a revelation at Swansea since moving to the Premier League from Rayo Vallecano in the summer of 2012.

He scored 22 goals in his first season in south Wales and already has five to his name in 2013/14.

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque opted to select Michu ahead of the more established Roberto Soldado and Fernando Llorente.

The European and world champions take on Belarus in Palma on Friday night before hosting Georgia in Albacete four days later.
