VENUE FOR SPAIN VS. BELARUS - Three injured in generator explosion at Iberostar

Friday, October 11, 2013 by Marca.com

Real Mallorca's stadium is the venue for this Friday's 2014 World Cup qualifier between Spain and Belarus.

According to reports by 'El Mundo', three people have been injured – two of them seriously –, after a generator exploded at the Iberostar Stadium in Palma de Mallorca. The injured have been taken to Hospital Son Espases.

Real Mallorca's stadium is the venue for this Friday's 2014 World Cup qualifier between Spain and Belarus. Apparently, the incident occurred at 3:15 pm local time, when three employees were working on an electrical panel in the stadium car park. The venue is due to host the 2014 World Cup qualifier match which pits Spain against Belarus tomorrow.

The Spain team was due to train under the orders of Vicente del Bosque at the Iberostar at 7:00 this evening.

"What concerns us is the condition of the injured pair"
Jorge Pérez, general secretary of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, spoke to Radio Marca regarding the seriousness of the accident that took place in the Mallorca stadium: "The injured pair are in hospital in a very serious condition. This is what really concerns us right now. The material damage can be repaired," he said.

Jorge Pérez went on to say, "we have been informed that the problem has been identified and can be repaired in time. Both teams will train there and the match will go ahead in Son Moix without any problem."

The accident has injured three workers, two with serious burns. "The match will take place, I can assure you. We are not planning to change the date," Jorge Pérez said in an effort to dispel rumours that the game might be suspended. Belorussia went ahead with its first official training session in Son Moix scheduled to start at 18.00, in spite of the generator exploding and cutting off the stadium's electricity supply.

The Police have ruled out any suspicion of the explosion being caused deliberately, stating that what transpired was "an accident" that took place while several technicians were working in the area.
