Quite simply, the game will go down as one of the most astonishing humiliations in the history of the sport. And Brazil fans watching on the big screens in Rio last night were left to process a result which sent shockwaves around the world: Brazil 1-7 Germany.

In a country of over 200 million people, World Cup heritage and success has long been a source of national pride, but last night the country was brought to its knees, as a rampant German side tore apart the five time World Cup winners.

The semi-final result in Belo Horizonte, which saw Brazil 5-0 down within the opening half an hour, drew comparisons with the 1950 World Cup final, when Brazil, also as hosts, lost to an unfancied Uruguay side - in a result dubbed the 'Maracanazo'.

Sixty-four years later that result still haunts the people of Brazil, the players on the pitch that day have never been allowed to forget the embarrassment they caused the country.

As the rain fell in Rio, and the colourful, happy-go-lucky portrait of Brazilan football was brought crashing down to earth, it appeared inevitable that Germany's World Cup demolition of Brazil on the 8th of July 2014, will be remembered in much the same way.
