Possibility 2022 World Cup Could be Moved - FIFA not ruling out Qatar re-vote
Monday, June 02, 2014 by Marca.comFIFA vice-president Jim Boyce has stated that he would be in favour of holding a re-vote to decide new hosts for the 2022 World Cup if proof emerges that corruption was used in Qatar's bid.
Boyce told BBC Radio 5 Live on Sunday that any evidence of wrongdoing uncovered by the FIFA investigator Michael J Garcia, who is due to meet with the Qatar 2022 Bid Committee this coming week, "has to be looked at very seriously".
"I certainly as a member of the Executive Committee would have absolutely no problem whatsoever if the recommendation was for a re-vote", stated Boyce. "The FIFA Executive Committee are 100% behind Garcia. He will be allowed to go and speak to anyone from around the world to complete his mission", he continued.
Documents leaked to The Sunday Times reveal that the former FIFA executive Mohamed bin Hammam, who hails from Qatar, made payments totalling $5 million (€3.7 million) to African football officials so as to secure their support for the Qatari 2022 World Cup bid.
According to the newspaper, thousands of bank transfer slips, faxes and emails attest to the links between Bin Hammam and these officials. Though the latter had no voting power, they are believed to have exerted considerable influence on the outcome of the bid process.
Bin Hammam is also alleged to have paid over $1.6 million into the bank account of Jack Warner, the former FIFA ExCo member for Trinidad and Tobago, just months before the vote.
