Roberto Martinez tips Ross Barkley to shine for England in the heat of battle in Brazil

Tuesday, May 06, 2014 by Dailymail

Roberto Martinez insists Ross Barkley is ready to impress at the World Cup but warned it would be foolish to think he can single-handedly carry England’s hopes.

The Everton midfielder has been in every England squad since last September, winning three caps in the process, and there is a clamour growing for Roy Hodgson to include him in the 23-man party he will unveil next Monday.

Barkley's outstanding performance against Manchester City on Saturday - which Hodgson saw in person at Goodison Park - furthered underlined his prodigious ability and Martinez believes the 20-year-old's ability to conjure something out of nothing will make him a valuable option.

On the plane: Roberto Martinez in convinced that Ross Barkley will be going to Brazil with England

Game changer: Barkley opened the scoring at Goodison Park with a screamer against Manchester City

Riding high: Barkley has emerged as one of England's finest talents after a successful domestic season

Martinez, though, has stressed it would be unrealistic to label Barkley as the man who could potentially transform a respectable campaign to one that ends with England being victorious in Rio on July 11.

'When you have 23 players to choose from I think Ross is quite unique,' said Everton's manager.

'I don't think there is another English player that can do what Ross does. Will we expect to win the World Cup because of Ross? No.'

'That is what we need to be clear on. He has the potential to be one of the best midfielders in world football at the age of 25, 26, 27 but not now.'

'If the role in the World Cup is to carry England, that is not Ross. But if it is someone that will be ready to help the team, someone who will be ready mentally and nothing will phase him, yes he has that character. He will be 100 per cent behind the team.'

'We need to protect a young man who is the best young English talent I've seen and worked with. I hope we can fulfil his potential and give him what he needs over the years.'

Barkley's first full campaign has been an outstanding success and his ability to score spectacular goals has been demonstrated against Norwich, Swansea, Newcastle and Manchester City but there have also been some occasions when his impact and consistency has dipped, when Martinez has tried him in different positions.

If Hodgson was to deliver disappointment and overlook Barkley, Martinez feels he would reap the benefits of a break this summer but that does not mean the Spaniard is concerned a trip to Brazil would be too physically demanding.

Young gun: Raheem Sterling is another young players who's impressed Roy Hodgson

Dead certainty: Adam Lallana's place in the England squad has all but been confirmed

'Remember that Ross is a young man and young men deserve to be able to drop their energy level,' said Martinez.

'He is not like a normal 25 or 26 year old who needs to be consistent with his performances. Ross is a star already, it is how you use it.'

'I have experimented with him in different positions and at times those have to be cut short and he accepts that.'

'Ross is a phenomenal talent and if England need him he will be ready. He is still a very young man so it is not a case of last chance to be involved in a World Cup. He is a proud man in terms of playing for England.'
