Portugal: Players named for World Cup

Portugal coach Paulo Bento has selected just two members of the all-conquering Benfica team to take to this summer's World Cup in Brazil.

The Eagles claimed the domestic treble in Portugal, but only provide defender Andre Almeida and midfielder Ruben Amorim for the 23-man squad for the tournament.

Talisman Cristiano Ronaldo is one of three Real Madrid players included, alongside defenders Fabio Coentrao and Pepe, with just eight of the squad playing in the Portuguese league alongside Almeida and Amorim.

Sporting Lisbon's Rui Patricio and Braga's Eduardo represent the Liga in goal, while midfielders William Carvalho and Rafa, and forwards Eder and Varela complete the domestic contingent.

Monaco's Joao Moutinho will be expected to provide the creative spark from central midfield alongside Miguel Veloso and Raul Meireles, while Manchester United's Nani is among the other notable names, the latter being the only representative of the Premier League.

The Portuguese are in Group G with Germany, the United States and Ghana, and will kick-off their tournament against the Germans on 16 June in Salvador.

Portugal squad:

Goalkeepers: Beto (Sevilla), Eduardo (Braga) and Rui Patricio (Sporting Lisbon).

Defenders: Andre Almeida (Benfica), Bruno Alves (Fenerbahce), Fabio Coentrao (Real Madrid), Joao Pereira (Valencia), Neto (Zenit St Petersburg), Pepe (Real Madrid), Ricardo Costa (Valencia).

Midfielders: Joao Moutinho (Monaco), Miguel Veloso (Dinamo Kiev), Raul Meireles (Fenerbahce), Ruben Amorim (Benfica), William Carvalho (Sporting Lisbon), Rafa (Braga).

Forwards: Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid), Eder (Braga), Helder Postiga (Lazio), Hugo Almeida (Besiktas), Nani (Manchester United), Varela, Vieirinha (Wolfsburg).
