Luis Suarez adds to his record

Monday, September 09, 2013 by Marca.com

Luis Suárez and Diego Forlán enjoy a healthy personal rivalry, one enjoyed by Uruguayans at home and abroad. One which answers, match after match, who Uruguay's all-time top goalscorer is. Whilst most Uruguayans look back at their country’s historic feats in the Maracaná, Montevideo or Colombes and Amsterdam, their all-time top scorers are modern-day heroes who are continuously breaking their own records.

Every game has a record to break and following the game against Peru, it is Luis Suárez who tops the leaderboard.

One chapter in their longstanding rivalry took place in Japan, when Uruguay beat the home side 4-2 thanks to a Diego Forlán brace. The strikes took Forlán's tally to 36 senior international goals. Suárez also scored, leaving both players as joint record holders, for one month at least.

However, Luis Suárez’s brace against Peru during last Friday’s 2014 World Cup qualifier in Lima again made the Liverpool striker his country’s all-time top goalscorer, for now at least.

Suárez has scored 38 goals for his country, 10 of which have been scored during the current qualifying campaign for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

"Hopefully we can continue competing with each other for as long as I’m in the squad - I have the least time left to play international football -, because it will mean that we continue scoring goals, which is great for the national team," Forlán said after the Japan game
