Chile's President Michelle Bachelet met members of the national football team at the presidential palace on Sunday, following their elimination from the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

A huge crowd gathered outside the palace, taking the opportunity to catch a glimpse of their heroes and welcome them home after a series of stirring performances in the tournament.

After an opening 3-1 win over Australia in Group B, Chile beat the reigning champions Spain 2-0, confirming their early exit.

Although a 2-0 defeat to the Netherlands ended their group campaign, Chile finished second in the table and went though to the knockout phase.

Jorge Sampaoli's side were unfortunate to be drawn against the host nation in the last 16, but matched Brazil all the way on Saturday in a 1-1 draw over 90 minutes.

After a goalless half-hour of extra time, the game moved to penalties and Chile found themselves on the wrong end of a 3-2 result and were knocked out of the tournament.

Players on the balcony didn't seem too sad on Sunday night though, as they embraced the atmosphere surrounding the palace.
