France fans celebrated their qualification to the quarter-finals at the World Cup on Monday following a 2-0 win over Nigeria in Brasilia.

In a tough battle where Nigeria had a goal ruled out for offside it took until the 79th minute for France to open the scoring.

Paul Pogba heading in after and error from Nigerian 'keeper Vincent Enyeama, before an own goal by Joseph Yobo confirmed France's spot in the last 8 in the 90th minute.

Dozens of fans wearing French colours left the Estadio Nacional in high spirits, celebrating and singing.

Frederic Maldonado said Nigeria played a great match, but he was delighted with the result.

SOUNDBITE: (French) Frederic Maldonado, France fan (rough translation):

"We are very happy. It was very stressful and too hot. The Brazilians were cheering for Nigeria and no one was cheering for us, but we made it work. They played a great match. It was very hard in the beginning because of the heat and the way Nigeria defended. At a certain point we upped the quality of our game and we scored. Now we are going to Rio. We are going to the World Cup quarter-finals."

One Nigerian fan said the players did well in the first half, but blamed the defeat on a technical error in the second.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Stephen Edex, Nigeria fan:

"Our boys have given the best on the first half. They did well. But the second half somehow there was technical error. Do you understand me? And that was why we lost the game."

France will now play Germany for a place in the semi-finals, after they beat Algeria 2-1 in extra-time.
