Football fans are paying their respects to Real Madrid great Alfredo di Stefano who died on Monday, aged 88.

The man himself requested to lie in rest at the Bernabeu where he was honorary president.

di Stefano helped Madrid win five straight European Cups, in all competitions he scored 216 goals in 262 appearences.

Eusebio and Sir Bobby Charlton described him as the most complete footballer they had ever seen, to Madrid fans he embodied everything this club stands for.

SOUNDBITE (Spanish): Javier Cordero, Real Madrid fan:

"My father took me to the Bernabeu Stadium when I was eight and from that moment I felt a great admiration (for di Stefano), because I think he, together with (Santiago) Bernabeu and (Raimundo) Saporta, turned Real Madrid into the best football club in the 20th century as declared by FIFA."

SOUNDBITE (Spanish): Javier Cordero, Real Madrid fan:

"He was the man who introduced a particular style of play, aggressiveness on the pitch, battling hard and working up a sweat in the match and, thanks to that, these values live on and make Real Madrid the best club ever."

His health declined in recent years but he fought on and was able to watch the club win their 10th European Cup earlier this year, He'd have a right to ask what took them so long.
