Mujica: FIFA directors are "a bunch of old sons of bitches"

Tuesday, July 01, 2014 by Marca.com

Uruguay president José Mujica has labelled the FIFA directors "a bunch of old sons of bitches" because of the "fascist" sanction imposed on Luis Suárez during the World Cup.

Those were the words chosen by the leader at Montevideo airport while he waited for the Uruguay team to return home, having been eliminated in the last 16 of the World Cup at the hands of James Rodríguez and company.

A journalist asked the president what this World Cup meant to him and his answer was broadcast on state television. Mujica remained loyal to his plain-speaking manner and did not mince his words.

"At FIFA they're a bunch of old sons of bitches," he claimed before jokingly covering his mouth. The journalist then asked the half-smiling Mujica if he wanted to rectify his comments before they were published, to which the president replied without hesitation: "Publish them," he ordered.

Lucía Topolansky, a Uruguayan senator and Mujica's wife, was swift to show her support for the president's powerful words with a smile.

Mujica had already previously criticised the FIFA sanction imposed on Suárez: "We have not had to suffer from an injustice or a sanction, which would be partially understandable. But what can never be understood is the gruesomeness, the way this has happened and the procedure used. It is a monstrous attack, not just on a man and a country, but fundamentally the way it has been conducted has become a derogatory source of contempt," exclaimed the veteran president during a radio address.
